Online Access

  • The Case Access Portal allows users access to basic case information. Interested persons can set up a free account before making a search.
  • Records from the Hillsborough Superior Court North, Hillsborough Superior Court South, and any Circuit Court division can be viewed through this portal.
  • Case summaries, filing dates, and hearing schedules are available for free public viewing. Full document images, however, are not available online.
  • Public felony and civil cases filed after September 2018 are available on the portal. Name changes, probate filings, and a few small claims can also be viewed remotely on the portal.
  • Domestic abuse orders, sealed files, and juvenile cases are not available online.

In-Person Access

Every Hillsborough County courthouse has a public computer terminal where parties can access complete case files for free. These can be used by residents and visitors.

The cost of a staff-printed page is fifty cents. It costs 25 cents per page to print from a self-service terminal. Courthouses are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mail and Phone Requests

  • A mail request requires completing and submitting the appropriate forms.
  • Requests submitted to the Superior Court and the Circuit Court's District and Family Division may use Form NHJB-2798-DFS. For probate requests, use Form NHJB-2941-P.
  • Most requests require 10 business days to process. Records dated before 1992 take longer because older files are stored off-site.
  • Payment should be made by check or credit card, payable to the NHJB Central Processing Center. Cash is not accepted by mail.

Fees for Court Records in Hillsborough County

Most court records in Hillsborough County are free to access. Fees only apply if staff need to process, search, copy, certify, or send records:

  • Viewing records in person at a courthouse kiosk: free
  • Official state processing fee for a name search: $6.50 per name, per court
  • Custodian search time for pre-1992 records: $25.00 per hour after the first hour
  • Staff-printed copies: $0.50 per page
  • Self-service kiosk printouts: $0.25 per page
  • Certified copies cost $10.00 each.
  • Certificate of judgment: $10.00
  • Exemplification of judgment: $40.00
  • Audio recordings of hearings: $35.00 per hearing day

Criminal Records Access in Hillsborough County

Hillsborough County courts do not conduct official criminal background checks. The New Hampshire Department of Safety, Division of State Police, Criminal Records Unit is responsible for conducting background checks. Only cases filed within the county are kept on file by county courts. However, the county courts can offer access to case-level records connected to criminal charges filed in Hillsborough County.

  • Online: Interested persons may search the Case Access Portal to find basic details on local criminal cases, including filing dates, hearing schedules, and case summaries.
  • In person: Complete case files can be viewed for free at public computer kiosks inside any county courthouse, open to residents and visitors alike, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Hillsborough County Probate Records

Hillsborough County probate records refer to all the documents that contain information on the legal activities taken to manage trusts, protect minors or incapacitated individuals, and manage trusts. The Probate Division of the Circuit Court maintains these documents. Common probate records include:

  • Wills: These are legal documents that state how a deceased person's belongings should be distributed (RSA Chapter 551).
  • Trusts: Legal agreements that manage assets for certain people.
  • Guardianships: court orders that appoint someone to care for a minor or an incapacitated person.
  • Conservatorships: court orders that appoint someone to manage another person's finances and property.

The Case Access Portal allows online searches of public probate records, including many recent filings, showing case summaries, filing dates, and hearing schedules. Users should, however, note that certain probate matters remain confidential, including guardianship and conservatorship cases involving minors or protected persons.

Hillsborough County Family Court Records

Access to family law cases in Hillsborough County depends on the type of case involved:

  • Divorce paperwork and final decisions are available to the public. However, sworn money statements are sealed and only accessible to the parties involved, their attorneys, and child support staff (Part I, Art. 8, N.H. Constitution; RSA 458:15-b).
  • Custody and parenting plans stay open to the public, but court-appointed guardian reports and information about child abuse claims are confidential (RSA 461-A; Supreme Court Rule 12).
  • Adoption files and proceedings concerning the termination of parental rights are sealed and cannot be viewed by the public (RSA 170-B; RSA 170-C).
  • Support orders and worksheets stay open. Although the tax forms and pay stubs that underlie them are confidential (RSA 458-C; RSA 458:15-b).

  • Case status and hearing dates can be accessed by the Case Access Portal, but complete documents cannot be downloaded online.
  • Every courthouse has a public computer and staff who pull files for on-site viewing.
  • Certified copies require a written request form and a copy fee. A judge's approval is needed for certified copies of sealed records (Family Division Rule 1.30).

Federal Court Records in Hillsborough County

Federal court records refer to all the documents associated with every case filed in the US District Court. These include federal law-based criminal charges, civil litigation, and bankruptcy filings. Examples include case dockets, filed motions, decisions, and orders.
